WALTZ

Probably the most popular dance of the last four decades. Replaced the fast Rotary Waltz with much slower music to which the dancers developed a beautiful dance in a diagonal pattern. The great master of slower waltz music was Irving Berlin with such ever popular melodies as Always and True Love.

TANGO

Originally an erotic dance from the Caribbean and the Argentine, the dance was tamed in France in the early twentieth century, and became a craze in England and the United States, where 'tango teas" took place, offering a small space for fashionable dancers to show off their skill.

QUICKSTEP

English version of the quick foxtrot adopted as a name in 1929 and performed smoothly with gliding steps and turns.

CHA CHA CHA

This fascinating rhythm has come to us from Cuba, the birthplace of that lovely and sensuous dance the Rumba. Cha Cha Cha music has its own attractive character, the melodic notes are played short or staccato. This has resulted in an exciting dance with figuration similar to the Rumba but with a chasse action added.

SAMBA

Brazilian carnival dance in 2/4 or 4/4 time whose name came from the dances performed by African slaves. It was introduced in a modified ballroom version at the New York World's Fair in 1939, and became popular in Europe after World War II.

JIVE

During the war big band swing music was at the height of its popularity. The American G.I.'s brought a new style of improvised dance called the Jitterbug.

From this very popular style our present day Jive has developed.

DISCO

Evolved from rock and roll in the American ice-cream parlour of the sixties. The twist introduced solo dancing and discotheques became fashionable. Disco dancing had a tremendous following in the seventies when John Travolta was featured learning to dance in Saturday Night Fever and is still popular today.

Disco today is a series of steps and moves designed to give enjoyment and fitness to Top Pop Music.
